Detail showing the cracking varnish, and "HAZARD" "BRAKE" lettering:
After stripping off all the varnish, using a heat gun and carefully prying with
a putty knife. Not too bad: some strips of the veneer came off, e.g. to the left
of the hazard switch:
After filling and touching up with "walnut" latex wood paste (upper piece in
photo), rubbed along the grain with 320 grit sandpaper, cleaned and just after
applying a first stain with "Red Mahogany" (glove box).
After the whole piece has been stained (two coats) and dried:
After applying "HAZARD" and "BRAKE" labels, printed in white letters on
transparent tape, on a Brother label maker, then a first coat (just applied) of
polyurethane clear gloss varnish.
This was rubbed down again with 320 grit, allowed to dry, and a further coat
applied, which is now drying. I intend to apply several more coats, until the
surface is as smooth as possible.
Here's the glovebox door:
The speedo was not working: a pawl had become detached. I dismantled the speed, cleaned it up, and refitted the pawl. Here is the dismantled speedo:
